Hey Family and Friends,
Things are going good. Confirmations: 8, Week 18, 10 behind. Wyoming
is harder than Salt Lake City. Its all good though. I really, really,
really appreciate the care package you guys sent. I was in a really
bad mood that day. We went from having no time (because there was so
much work in Salt Lake City; we could not even visit all of our
referalls) to having pretty much nothing to do most of the time except
tracting and getting referalls from leadership / members. They are
experimenting with my companion and I. They split an area, and gave us
one of the split pieces; the piece that had the least amount of work.
The mission president told us that he was going to give us a
challange, and they are basically trying to see if this area is
capable of producing baptisms by itself. The goal they set for us is
one a week. We have baptisms coming up, but are trying to replenish
our teaching pool so it will be sustainable, because after they are
baptized, we will have very few people to teach. And during our weekly
sport, my companion got mad because I got him out in scatterball (a
version of dodgeball) he ran into me from behind so I shoved him and
threw a punch at his face but he backed up. He left the gym for about
2 hours but we ended up resolving everything. So I really appreciated
the package. Seriously. Thanks so much you guys. I love you guys. I
have to go. My companion is waiting. Talk to you all later.

Hey Everyone,
How are all of you doing? Things are going great here. We have had six
baptisms so far on the mission and our seventh is this Saturday.
Transfers are next Wednesday and I don't know whether I will stay in
this area or go somewhere else. I only have a few minutes to write. We
are going golfing with the mission president today. It was a reward
for our zone reaching 23 baptisms last month. Pretty cool. There are
some awesome people I have met since I have been out here. Who your
companion is, along with whoever is in your district and zone really
influences how much you enjoy the mission. Anyways, does anyone know
what my blog address is? I actually don't know it. I have some awesome
videos for it though. I better go. I love you guys, and I always
appreciate (extremely) your letters, e-mails and everything else you
do. Talk to you later,
Love Sterling

p.s.

Hey Everyone,
I wrote my main e-mail earlier today, then we went bowling for
preparation day, and now we are back at the family history center. I
was wondering if anyone could look for a book that taught the basics
of how to learn Arabic. If you could find one, that would be awesome.
Something that covers basic grammer, characters, simple phrases etc.
Easy difficulty, not moderate or hard, but not a book with 2 pages
that says only "Hi , bye, etc." Anyways, someone got upset for me
being on the computer. Got to go.

Hey Family & Friends,
How is everyone doing? Things are going good here. We have 2 baptisms
scheduled for this weekend. The same people I mentioned last week,
Faten & Majedah Ghanem. Mission Weeks start on Monday. Baptisms: 3,
Week: 13, Difference: 10. So I am way behind :( . After this weekend
(next Monday) Baptisms: 5, Week: 14, Difference: 9. Currently, we have
4 people on date for baptism right now, and 8 people who are ready to
be baptized without a set date yet. Things are going great. Everyone
makes fun of the Salt Lake City mission. Very few people (even here)
know that it is the highest baptizing mission in the world. Actually
we fight with SLC South and Provo for first. It goes back and forth
between those three every year. The average missionary in the SLC
mission baptizes about 50 people within the 2 years they are here,
which totally kills other missions. The key word is average. The
average missionary (worldwide) baptizes 1.86 people (round up to two
to be courteous.) Hahahahaha. Just kidding. Our success comes from
referalls, which comes from members. Too bad. I was hoping it was just
my awesome teaching skills, but it isnt. Things are going good though.
Thank you all so much for your prayers, e-mails, letters and
everything else you do. It really, really helps. I am very grateful
for my family and friends. Thanks again everyone. Talk to you later,
Sterling

Hey Everyone,
Things are going pretty good. We have 2 baptisms this weekend. Pretty
cool! Hopefully they go through. If they do then I will only be... 9
baptisms behind... Lol! Jennifer is getting baptized, along with
Salaha. They are both pretty awesome. Guess what though. We have
baptisms scheduled for next weekend! Yeah! I am going to send my SD
Card back pretty soon, so you will get to see Stacy (10 year old girl
we baptized) along with the next 2 baptisms that are coming up. I will
take pictures of all of them. Maybe Nat & Joe will put them on the
blog. What was the blog URL again? Things are much easier than the
first transfer. My new companion is much more relaxed. With my last
companion, we would get in random arguments sometimes. We were talking
about cars. I mentioned the term "timing belt". He said "Do you mean
timing chain?" I said " No timing belt, you know, the belt that runs
from the engine shaft to the camshaft". He told me that there were
only chains and that "any engineer who used a belt would be a total
idiot because it would slip and destroy the engine". So we asked
someone else and they were like "Most cars use timing belts". There
was another day when we were copying something. It copied wrong. I
changed a setting to fix it and was ready to hit copy. He said "no,
let me look through the settings first." I said I already  fixed it. I
went to copy it and he stopped me. We argued heavily for about 30
seconds and finally I just hit copy in the middle of his sentence. It
came out perfect. Then I arrogantly threw it in his face (which was
wrong). Nothing like that has happened in this transfer with my new
companion. Before, it was constant (well every other day or so.) I
also became really upset when he told me to stop playing "The Spirit
of God" on the piano. Apparently the mission presidents wife said that
we cant play the second song in the hymnbook because it is too sacred.
I told him that that rule was not, in any way, Gods will, but that it
was entirely her opinion. He said "Are you going to pick and choose
which commandments you obey?" And he used the word "obedience" about
30 times in the conversation. And then he used the scripture talking
about the 2000 stripling warriors, and how they obeyed "with
exactness". I told him that God could care less if I played that song,
and that if he did, I would be willing to confess my mistake to him,
repent, and then pay the horrible price of playing the second song in
the hymnbook. I basically told him that he was full of garbage and
that the prophets and apostles instituted the hymnbook for the
members, not the other way around. I also said that the mission
presidents wife was "overriding" the entire church by telling us we
could not play it, and then elaborated heavily on that point. In the
scriptural sense, he was "straining at gnats and swallowing camels."
And then I brought up multiple events that proved my point directly
(which he could not deny). After I destroyed his argument, he fell
back on the word "obedience", and kept repeating "are you going to
choose which commandments you obey?" Then I brought up a long list of
commandments he did not obey, along with almost every missionary out
here. That made him angry. It got to the point where we were yelling,
mainly because A. He didn't win the argument and B. I was tired of
taking whatever he decided to throw on me. Before that point I had
been submitting to what he told me to do. Pretty funny now, but
frustrating at the time. That happened a lot. I have a lot of work to
do when it comes to becoming more humble. I really am not humble.
Especially when things like that would happen. I have a lot of things
I need to work on. I am just extremely happy now that I am out of that
situation, and that we are having success. I attribute it only to God.
I have not found any of the people who are getting baptized. They all
came to us. God has blessed us. Thanks for your letters and e-mails.
Thanks for your prayers. It all really, really helps and I appreciate
it a lot. Have a great week everyone.

Hey Family and Friends,
How are things going? Its great to hear from everyone. I have a new
companion now, but I'm staying in the same area. We cover the Granite
Park and Winder West Stake's. Our physical address (not mailing
address) is:
3470 South 335 East
Salt Lake City UT
84115

(Note: This is where we live. We are not allowed to see family or
friends... unless we just happen to run into them. Unless we just
accidentally, somehow, in some amazing and unlikely coincidence are in
the same place at the same time. So don't get any ideas.)

Our mailing address is :
Elder Sterling Ron Sharp
Utah Salt Lake City Mission
3487 South 1300 East
Salt Lake City, UT 84106

Our phone number is: 801-608-9165

Anyways, Chelsie, Salaha and Jennifer are all still good to go. They
are solid and on date to be baptized. We had 1 baptism last transfer
(which was also my first transfer.) Since we are staying in the same
area, I am working with many of the same people. However, there is now
a family of 6 who want to be baptized. They are the Parra Family. And
there is another Islamic woman who wants to be baptized. Her Name is
Faten. She is solid also. And I forgot to mention that we are teaching
Jennifer's Husband now. Heavenly Father has really blessed us. All of
these people contacted us, so even though I'm excited about baptizing
6 - 10 people this transfer, its always important to remember who it
is that is blessing them and us with this success. Heavenly Father,
Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost. The people who will be baptized this
transfer (unless an asteroid comes out of the sky and wipes out Salt
Lake) are : Jennifer, Salaha, Chelsie, Faten, Para (mother, son). So,
if we don't add anyone else for baptism, we will get 6. The father of
the Para family will get baptized, but he has to overcome his
addiction to smoking, and I've found out quickly that nicotine is more
addictive than many illegal drugs. Interestingly enough, people who
have been addicted to illegal drugs and smoking said that the illegal
drugs were fairly easy to quit; and that smoking was very difficult to
quit. At least that's what we have been told by a handful of people
who did both. We have a program designed to help people stop. Also,
the other son in the Para family may get baptized. The two daughters
could, but they are shaky. Jeniffer's husband will get baptized, but
it may not be within this transfer. The Ilunga Family (from the Congo)
may get baptized, but they are shaky also. There are also many other
Investigators I have not mentioned. Solid baptisms: 6. Potential: 10 -
14. Goal: 10. The goal is 1 baptism per week. I also included the MTC
weeks (3) and I tack on every week that we do not get a baptism. So
right now, we have 1 baptism. It is week 10 (3 weeks MTC, 6 Weeks last
transfer, and the 6 total days at the beginning and end of year that
are separate.) 104 Weeks 6 days = 105 Baptisms. So I am 9 Baptisms
behind. So if I reach the goal of 10, I will be 5 behind next
transfer. It will work out the way God wants it to. If he wants me to
hit my goals, I will. Anyways, I love all of you. Thanks so much for
the awesome birthday! I hope you are all doing well. Write me whenever
you get time. Its always great to hear from you.

03/24/2010

Hey Everyone.
Things are going pretty good. I'm really disappointed because all 3 of
our on date investigators (on date to be baptized) were moved back. 2
of those 3 investigators will definitely get baptized within the next
transfer, but I may not be here then. We spend a lot of time trying to
help people overcome addictions. They have to overcome those
addictions for a period of time before they can be baptized. General
conference cuts off our last week to put people on date. At least we
still had one baptism for the transfer though. I cant really think of
too much to say. We are doing our best out here. I found my favorite
scripture. Pretty much everyone knows it already but I'll give it to
you anyway. Matthew 25: 34 - 40. Jesus Christ was teaching this
directly.

34 Then shall the King say unto them on his aright hand, Come, ye
blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the
foundation of the world:
35 For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye
gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in
prison, and ye came unto me.
37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we
thee an hungered, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto
you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my
brethren, ye have done it unto me.

Anyways, I hope all of you are doing well. I'm really tired and it
makes it much harder to think of what to say. Talk to all of you
later, and thanks again for the awesome birthday. Love Sterling.

Ster's Email 3/17/2010

Hey Family/Friends, We had our first baptism! It was awesome! Could you guys please send me Janelle's + Terry's + Caralee's + Grandma Tomlinsons E-mail? I would really like to let them know whats going on. One of our baptisms was moved back. Hopefully we will be able to baptize her before the transfer is over. We also added one more person on date for baptism. So if these 2 go through, that will be 3 baptisms for this transfer. Only half the goal, but still good. Our baptism was a 10 year old girl named Stacy. The baptism moved back was Salaha, the older woman (60+) from Afghanistan. The baptism date we added was Chelsie, a 22 year old girl who is interested in being baptized and joining the church. Things are going well. My mailing address is: Elder Sterling Ron Sharp 3487 S 1300 E Salt Lake City Utah 84106 Thanks so much everyone for the birthday gifts! You guys are awesome! Please forward my message to the family e-mail addresses I don't have. I want to thank the whole family for the awesome birthday I had. Also, my companion (and trainer) is from British Columbia, Canada. Mom sent me a ton of stuff from Canada, so he was really excited to see all of this stuff from there! A Hockey puck, tie pin, different types of chocolate, a shirt, cup and all sorts of other things (especially the hockey puck, since they beat us in the Olympics. He took so much garbage because they lost the first game). It was awesome! And our dinner appointment brought us Cafe Rio! They didn't know it was my birthday either. It was an awesome day. Thanks again so much for everything you guys. I really appreciate everything you do. Even just getting an e-mail or letter really elevates my mood. Don't forget though, I only can check or write e-mails on Wednesday (preparation day) for 1 hr 15 min. Also, I only receive postal mail (or any type of mail) once a week. It is delivered to the mission office, then our zone leaders give it to us on Monday. So every Monday for mail, Wednesday for e-mail; so if I don't respond faster, I'm not mad, I just haven't received it yet. Thanks for everything. The family gift (electric toothbrush) was awesome too! I definitely needed it. I love all of you so much. Having an awesome family is a great blessing and I'm very grateful for all of you. I hope your all doing well. Love Sterling

March 10, 2010 email

Hey Family/Friends, Email time is really limited. 1 hr 15 min once a week, so I'm going to send an e-mail out to the whole family. I don't have Terry's e-mail and I don't have Janelle's e-mail so if anyone could send those addresses that would be great. If you wouldn't mind forwarding this e-mail to them that would be appreciated also. As far as whats going on here, we have 2 baptisms scheduled so far. My goal is 1 baptism a week. A transfer is 6 weeks, so I would need 6 baptisms per transfer to hit the goal. Right now, it only looks like we are going to get 3 - 4 baptisms for this transfer, so I will have to step it up to hit the goal. Pretty awesome for a first transfer though. It was definitely not us, but it was God who brought us so much success. Hopefully Heavenly Father will help me to hit our goal for this transfer; if not, to make up the difference next transfer. Its really exciting though. One of our baptisms was a 60 + year old woman from Afghanistan. She has been walking to the local LDS church for 6 months and has already been taught the gospel by her friend (a woman from Iraq who worked as a translator. She had been in the United States for 20 + years.) She knows very little English so her friend had to translate for us/her. We have people like that showing up all over the place. Definitely God, not us. My goal is pretty out there; 1 baptism per week = over 100 baptisms before I come home. I'm going to do everything I can to hit it though, and then pray to the Lord to fill in the (massive) difference. We are very busy. The only way we tract is if we schedule it, because there is never free time to do it otherwise. There are always investigators/less active members to see. We follow our schedule exactly. At most, we may start or end something 1 - 2 minutes early/late but rarely. The mission has gotten much stricter. You do not do anything that your told not to. Like chewing gum; not allowed in public (unless you are in your apartment... meaning sleeping, eating or studying, so why would you be chewing gum anyways?) And the rules are enforced here. You do what your told, and there is more than enough leadership around (its Salt Lake) to enforce all rules. We have apostles all around us and Thomas S. Monson's house is in our mission, which is part of the reason standards are so high. Could you also send me Grandma Tomlinson's e-mail? I heard that she is in the hospital and I'm worried. Not that she will get my e-mail anyways while she's there, but it would be nice to let her know whats going on once she gets out. Anyways, I hope everyone is doing good. I love all of you and pray that everything is going well. If I knew my address, I would send it right now, but I forgot to grab the paper it was on. I will send it to you later (no later than next week's e-mail.) Again, I love all of you and will pray for you. Sterling
